  • James Robbie Robertson - guitar - b. July 5, 1944, Toronto, Canada - formerly with Robbie and the Robots, Thumper and the Trambones, Little Caesar and the Consuls, and Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks.
  • Richard Manuel - keyboards/vocals - b. April 3, 1945, Stratford, Canada; d. March 4, 1986, Winter Park, Florida (hanging) - formerly with The Rockin' Revols and Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks.
  • Garth Hudson - keyboards/sax - b. August 2, ca 1943, London, Canada - formerly with Paul London and the Kapers and Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks.
  • Rick Danko - bass/viola/vocals - b. December 9, 1943, Simcoe, Canada; d. December 10, 1999 - formerly with Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks.
  • Levon Helm - drums/vocals/mandolin - b. May 26, 1940, Marvell, Arkansas - formerly with The Jungle Bush Beaters and Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks.

Toured as Bob Dylan's backup band during 1965-1966; changed name to The Band.
